Headline News - Fire Safety Breaches Cost Father and Son over £50,000 March 17, 2009

A father and son were ordered to pay out more than £50,000 after poor fire safety standards at a building in Kidderminster led to four tenants having to be rescued in a fire.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service brought proceedings against Brian Murdoch, who owns the property, and his son David, who was responsible for its day-to-day running.

The fire spread through the building- which comprises commercial premises on the ground floor, with flats above- four people were sleeping at the time.

Brian Murdoch pleaded guilty to six breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and his son pleaded guilty to eight. The charges included failing to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, and to ensure that facilities, equipment and devices in the premises were suitably maintained and in good working order.

In particular, the court heard that two fire alarms had been fitted on the second floor, but they were not checked to ensure that they would alert tenants, if activated. Both men were fined a total of £11,600 and ordered to pay costs of £39,695.

Had Brian and David Murdoch invested in sufficient fire safety equipment and arranged a risk assessment and maintenance contract on their property for a fraction of the cost of their fine, the whole incident may have been avoided and prosecution would not have been feasible.

To protect your premises from any infringement of the Regulatory Reform Order and the possibility of extensive fines, call Amsec UK today to discuss our range of fire detection systems.

Headline News - The Cost of Shoplifting Rises to £6 Billion Each Year March 2, 2009

Statistics reveal the cost to businesses from shoplifting has risen to over £6 billion each year. In 2007-08, a staggering 290,625 shoplifting incidents were recorded. This comes as a massive increase in comparison to the 259,000 recorded incidents in 1997.

This amount of crime on small organisations in particular, is beginning to affect business in a number of ways. It leads to an inability to meet customer deadlines, damages profitability, wastes management’s time and affects staff morale among other things. Some 57% of businesses are victims of crime every year. In any 12 month period, 45% of businesses say that crime has cost them up to £5,000 and 12% claim it has cost them over £10,000; a lot of money for small companies, especially at this time of economical crisis.

According to the British Chambers of Commerce, this is beginning to have a secondary impact on customers and individuals in society; it is reflected in the price of goods and in higher insurance premiums.

Securing your business or organisation with Amsec will undoubtedly reduce the possibility of you becoming a victim of such crimes.

A state of the art CCTV system will not only act as a deterrent from vision alone, but provides continuous monitoring and surveillance; recorded images can be used as evidence as and when needed, and it has become a vital and powerful tool for businesses. An electronic Intruder Alarm system provides cost effective protection against intrusion, theft and criminal damage.

Whether you are a large or small business, Amsec can design, install and maintain a security package to your individual needs.
